    Description

    Title:
World War 1 WW1 Imperial German Prussian Festival Balloon Lantern Lampion
    Description:
Well, what can I say... if you like unusual early Imperial memorabilia like I do this has got to be up there!
For sale is a very early Imperial German paper balloon lampion. These lampions would be filled with a small lit candle and routinely hung during the holidays seasons or special occasions and light up the households all across the Germany countryside. These balloons were the ultimate sign of German patriotism during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Given there paper construction and general purpose its not surprising how there are virtually none in existence and very limited references or empirical data exists on these to this day. This one appears unused and looks as though a candle was never set inside of this piece.
These are exactly same as the much more common German Nazi NSDAP Balloon Lanterns that occasionally pop up for sale and is of the same design, construction and general purpose.
Upon opening, the lantern unveils a breathtaking pair of vibrantly colored Imperial German Eagles on both sides. Surrounding the eagles, a beautiful rich green holiday wreath with Germany's tricolor ribbon streamers attached. The lantern has an embossed textured appearance giving the balloon a very aesthetic look and has two tricolor balls at each side where the paper rolls around itself.
The lantern easily rolls open with the two medal secured hooks at the top and has a closing mechanism to lock the balloon for storage. Each hook appears to be one solid piece of medal secured around the length of each side of the lantern and is in fantastic condition given its purpose and how frail these likely were. Securely affixed inside the paper lantern lies an aluminum candle holder at the base where the candle would have been placed.
